Is Your Atta Safe? Dangerous Flour Adulteration Uncovered in Uttar Pradesh

Updated: 1 day ago

In January 2025, a significant food adulteration case emerged in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, where a local flour mill was found mixing alum powder (known as 'selkhadi') and rice husk into wheat flour to enhance its whiteness and appearance. This adulterated flour was being distributed to neighboring regions, including Delhi NCR.

Health Risks of Alum-Adulterated Flour:

  • Neurological Impact: Consumption of alum can adversely affect the nervous system, leading to headaches, dizziness, and prolonged exposure may result in more severe neurological disorders.

  • Increased Cancer Risk: Studies suggest a correlation between alum intake and a heightened risk of developing cancer.

  • Organ Damage: Regular ingestion can harm vital organs such as the kidneys, lungs, and heart.

  • Risks to Pregnant Women: Pregnant women consuming alum-adulterated products may face complications, potentially affecting fetal development and leading to congenital disabilities. Navbharat Times

Broader Issue of Flour Adulteration:

This incident is part of a larger pattern of flour adulteration. In March 2024, reports indicated that certain flour mills were blending maize and broken rice into wheat flour to cut costs, compromising the flour's quality and nutritional value.

Protecting Your Family from Adulterated Flour:

To ensure the safety and quality of the flour you consume:

  1. Source Wisely: Purchase flour from reputable brands and trusted vendors known for stringent quality controls.

  2. Visual Inspection: Pure wheat flour typically has a uniform color and texture. Any unusual whiteness or inconsistent texture may indicate adulteration.

  3. Water Test: Mix a small amount of flour in water. Pure flour will settle uniformly, while adulterated flour may show residues floating or settling differently.

  4. Stay Informed: Keep abreast of local food safety alerts and reports to be aware of any adulteration incidents in your area.

Food adulteration poses a significant threat to public health. By remaining vigilant and adopting precautionary measures, we can safeguard our families from the dangers of contaminated food products.
